Day 1. ARRIVAL AT PARO AIRPORT AND TRANSFER TO THIMPHU

You will be flying in and arriving in Paro, Bhutan amidst magnificent views. (Tip: Make sure you book a window seat, as the landing is one of the most spectacular in the world!) You’ll be greeted by the world’s highest Himalayan snowcapped peaks and the lush green Paro valley.

Dr. Karma and Yana will greet you at the airport upon arrival and you’ll be chauffeured straight to Thimphu. In the evening visit Tashichodzong (capital fortress) that serves as the royal office of His Majesty King, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, national government offices, the summer residence for Je Khenpo (chief abbot) and central monastic body of Bhutan. Later visit centenary Sunday market and walk in the archery field to watch the archery match.

Day 2. PUNAKHA – THE ANCIENT CAPITAL

After breakfast we’ll hike to Cheri, the first monastic school of Druk Kagyud started by Zhabdrung Rinpoche and then go to the ancient capital valley of Bhutan, Punakha. Morning journey will be a dramatic drive following the course of the Thimphu Chu (river) onto the high mountain pass of Dochu La (3,050m).

It’s a beautiful pilgrimage that includes one of Bhutan first fortress monastery, the 17th century Simtokha Dzong. On the clear days, towering Himalayan snowcapped peaks are visible and the pass graced with 108 stupas, erected by the Royal Queens of Bhutan.

Day 3. PUNAKHA – PLACES OF POWER

After breakfast we hike up to Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, which is located on the ridge above the Punakha Valley.   This chorten depicts the story of subduing our inner demons. 

After lunch we’ll visit the town temple and the Chimi Lhakhang, the famous fertility monastery built in 1456. It’s a pleasant walk through the paddy fields and farm houses ends at Chimi Lhakahng, a temple dedicated to yogi saint Drukpa Kuenley (popularly known as ‘the divine madman’ 1455-1529).

Late afternoon will be for you to rest, rejuvenate and reflect.

In the evening we’ll visit a nunnery, witnessing devotional chanting by nuns.

Day 4. FROM PUNAKHA TO TRONGSA

Today our journey will be to Trongsa with an en-route stop to visit Phobjika Valley popularly known as Gangtey at an altitude of 3,000 meters. This glacier valley is home of the rural settlement of Gangtey and Black necked crane.   

We will visit a 453-year-old Gangte Gonpa, the most important monastery of the Pedling tradition of Buddhism in western Bhutan. The valley is one of the most beautiful spots in the country and home to endanger Black Necked Cranes that migrate from northern Tibet to escape its harsh winter. 

We will then drive eastward through the 3300m pelela pass to Trongsa Dzong one of the largest and the most impressive dzong in Bhutan, signifying the magnificent work of Buddhist architecture. It has been described as being perched so high on a mountain that the clouds float below it. It is the ancestral home of Bhutan’s royal family. The first two hereditary kings ruled from this dzong, and it is still a tradition that the crown prince first serves as Trongsa Penlop before ascending to the throne.

Day 5. FROM TRONGSA TO BUMTHANG

Bumthang is the most historical valley visited by the great Buddhist saint from India, Guru Rinpoche in the 8th century A.D. Bumthang also served as the home of famous saints of Nyingma School, such as Longchen Rabjampa (1308-1521) of Tibet who was exiled to Bhutan for more than 10 years and Terton Pema Lingpa, the reincarnation of Longchen Rabjampa, to whose descendants the present dynasty traces its ancestry.

In the afternoon a visit to Jakar Dzong, the ‘dzong of the white bird’. A picturesque location overlooking the spectacular Chhoekhor valley.

Day 6. BUMTHANG FESTIVAL

After breakfast we will drive to Choekhor to witness Nga Lhakhang Zhi festival and after lunch hike to shukdra Guru Rinpoche meditation cave.

Day 7. BUMTHANG-TANG EXCURSION

After breakfast drive to Tang Valley for an enjoyable excursion, which is the most remote valley in Bumthang. While at the Tang, you will visit 16th century Ugyenchholing Palace or the country manor, which is now turned into a museum.

On the way back to town, we will pay homage at Tang Rimochen temple, from were Guru Rinpoche revealed one of the main treasure and later we will visit Nunnery and The Burning Lake – a narrow gorge river which contains one of the great pilgrimage sites in Bhutan.

Day 8. BUMTHANG-PARO (FLIGHT)

After breakfast we will fly to Paro.

After lunch we will visit The Kyichu Temple is one of the 108 temples built in the 7th century A.D by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet as a missionary project to pin down the left foot of ogress and visit town temple and Paro market.

In the afternoon a beautiful hike to Dzongdra temple.

Day 9. TAKTSANG HIKE – THE TIGER’S NEST 

7:30 – 8:30 am Breakfast

After breakfast, will start our main hike to the mystical Taktsang monastery (Tigers nest). Taktsang is one of the most important pieces of architecture building in Bhutan, Taktsang monastery defies logic, gravity, and reason.

Taktsang Monastery is the most famous and sacred monastery in Bhutan, perched on the side of a cliff 900m above the floor of the Paro valley. The Taktshang means ‘tiger nest’ and named because Guru Rinpoche is said to have flown to the site of the monastery on the back of a flaming tigress. He then meditated in a cave here for three months. People all over world walk here for pilgrimage and blessings.

There will also be free time to explore yourself down Town of Paro.

Day 10. DEPARTURE

You have the opportunity to wander the streets and peruse the markets and purchase wares for souvenirs, or find yourself in a spa to prepare yourself for your flight home.  If you are leaving for Bangkok, you will be transferred around 14:00 to the airport.  And that will be your farewell of your Bhutanese pilgrimage, until the next one.

        About YOUR Facilitator Yana Fry

        Yana Fry is an experienced retreat facilitator, motivational speaker, life coach, social catalyst and founder of YanaTV. Yana has worked with numerous entrepreneurs, thought leaders and change makers, helping them to rediscover their full potential and inner peace. Yana designs and leads highly experiential and deeply transformational workshops, programs and retreats all over the world. She has a lifetime of experience in meditation, mindset, and mindfulness. At the age of 27 Yana has experienced a significant spiritual shift and since then she has been a thought after guide for successful urban people, who want to live a happy and fulfilled life, build a meaningful business and make a positive impact in the world.

        About YOUR Guide Dr. Karma

        Dr. Karma Wangchuk is the owner of Vajra Guru Spiritual Travels, a registered travel agency in the Kingdom of Bhutan. He is known to satisfy visitors’ specific curiosities about his country, especially those related to the long standing traditions of Mahayana Vajrayana Buddhism found there.

        At present, Karma also works as the lead trainer in the Tourism Council of Bhutan Guide Training Programs, teaching Buddhism, iconography and other disciplines to cultural guides. Dr. Karma Wangchuk is called “Doctor” because he has earned a PhD from University of Delhi in Buddhist Studies. He was a Gold Medalist in the M.A Buddhist Studies Program there; while studying there he was a monk for eight years.

        He is a practitioner of the Nyingmapa and Kagyupa traditions of Mahayana & vajrayana Buddhism for many years. Vajra Guru Spiritual Travels has been established with the aim to serve and guide especially spiritual and Dharma seekers through theoretical and practical experiences while in the Kingdom of Bhutan.
